Chapter 10

As Mason suspected, the library was quiet. The only woman working was Lauren, a middle-aged woman who wasn't officially a librarian and who only worked weekends. Mason barely knew her. He had only crossed paths with her at staff meetings and holiday functions.

He walked up to the front desk and smiled at her. "Hi, Lauren. I don't know if you remember me. I'm Mason. I work through the week. I just remembered there's some work I need to get done. I won't be long and I shouldn't have to disturb you."

Lauren was face-deep into her book of Sudoku puzzles and barely made a response to what Mason said, only lifting her head to briefly acknowledge him. He had pulled out his staff ID but she did little more than glance at it. But when she looked up, she instantly noticed Carter. And her demeanor changed entirely. It was unmistakable that she liked what she saw. The man was handsome, after all. She tugged her floral blouse and ran her fingers through her thick red hair before adjusting the glasses on her face. "Can I help you?"

In a nonchalant voice, Carter answered, "I'm with him."

Not in a million years would Mason have assumed that Lauren liked younger men. She absolutely didn't look the type. But he was also certain that, in the normal daily functioning of a cambion exterminator, Carter used his looks to his advantage. Mason looked over at Carter. "I'll be back here. I shouldn't be long."

Mason circled Lauren's desk and went down the hallway. The only computers that had unrestricted access to the variety of databases the library offered were in the back. The main computers were for the students and they needed permission to access them. He walked over to one of the cubicles in the back and turned on the computer. It didn't take long before he was online and searching.

More than half an hour passed before he'd finished and had printed out a variety of news stories, reports, articles, and maps. He gathered them up, logged out, turned off the light, and went back to Carter, who was sitting near Lauren, trying to ignore her gaze as he kept his nose buried in a magazine in which he almost certainly had no interest.

"Okay, I got some stuff," Mason said walking away from Lauren and leading them somewhere quiet and secure.

They walked to the part of the library with comfy chairs and tables and sat. Mason pulled out a printed list. "I did a search on murders where exsanguination occurred. There have been six in the past month alone. Before that, there hadn't been one in over nine years. So we can assume the cambions are responsible."

Carter lifted the piece of paper and scanned it. "Are you kidding me? You got the information in only a half hour?"

"I guess I'm useful," Mason replied with a smile.

Carter shuffled through the papers. "What's this map?" There was writing on the map and numbers. Mason took the printed out map and placed it on the table.
